Canada’s Greener Homes Loan is a government program that provides interest-free loans ranging from $5,000 – $40,000 to eligible homeowners to make energy-efficient improvements to their homes. While the program does not specifically mention solar panel installation as an eligible expense, solar panel installation can be included as part of a larger package of energy-efficient upgrades.
To qualify for the loan, you will need to complete an energy assessment of your home and work with a registered energy advisor to identify the energy-efficient upgrades that would be most beneficial for your home.Â
The loan is provided at a 0% interest rate, which means that you won’t have to pay any interest charges on the loan. This can help you save money on the cost of borrowing and make the loan more affordable for you. Additionally, you can repay the loan over a period of up to 10 years, which can help you spread out the cost of the upgrades over a longer period of time.
If the energy advisor recommends solar panels as part of the package of upgrades, you may be eligible to include the cost of the solar panel installation in your loan. By including the cost of the solar panel installation in your loan, you can spread out the cost of the installation over a longer period of time, making it more affordable and manageable for you.
“A maximum of one loan is available per eligible property and homeowner.” – Canadian Government
The loan can only be used to finance your solar products and the installation cost.Â
You are able to receive a portion of your loan up front to help with any start up costs. After your final inspection the remainder of the loan will be transferred to you.
